Lean Practitioner Module List
The Lean Practitioner Learning Course consists of a broad comprehensive range of modules. These are designed to deliver a practical hands-on approach to learning all aspects of the Lean Business Methodology and their implementation in the real world.
Please go to Course Details for information on course location, dates, fees and how to enrol. The table at the end highlights those modules that are most applicable for certain industries, and for organisations/departments where Lean is a new concept.
The modules ELS currently offers are:-
Lean Business Implementation - where do we start?
You will gain a keen understanding of the Lean business model and what it can deliver. We will map your businesses/department/process and define what its potential is. We will measure that potential and put together an outline plan so you can get there.
Mapping (Value stream mapping, Process mapping)
We will define maps for all of your physical and information flows necessary for a particular value stream or process. This will enable us to understand the situation and the complex underlying issues. A Future State Map (the ideal system) will then be generated along with an improvement plan to progress from the current state towards that ideal future state.
Although Value Stream Mapping is often associated with manufacturing it can be used in any system regardless of the discipline such as logistics, supply chain, service related industries, healthcare, product development, administration etc.
Assess your business
How do you benchmark Lean progress?
Which part of your business needs most help?
Where the problems materialise is not always the place of origin.
We will work with you to provide an in depth lean assessment of every aspect of your business. We will outline the areas of strength and the development areas in an objective measured way. We will then develop a route map as a starting point to tackle the issues. The assessment criteria are then used as an on going measure to benchmark your lean journey progress and assist in setting your ongoing Lean Strategy.
OGSM – setting the direction
A system of policy (or strategy) deployment that will simplify a business strategy (Objectives & Goals) into actions (Strategy & Measures). down through the organisation.
We will help you to develop your own OGSM and show you how to successfully deploy it throughout your business.
The Lean Office
Perhaps this your first venture into transforming your business into a Lean Enterprise?
Perhaps you are working on a Lean program but the results aren’t sticking?
Perhaps your Lean programme has stalled or even slipped backwards?
The setting up and running of the Continuous Improvement (CI) team, from roles and responsibilities to activities and the tools used, is crucial to long term success and sustained results. We will work through your issues to ensure your lean programme continually delivers sustainable results.
Practical Problem Resolution
Understanding the root cause of your business problems, especially repeating issues, is key to solving them in such a way as to ensure that they never re-occur. This will enable your business to achieve its goals but what is the process to do this?
You will learn the methodology and implementation that has saved businesses millions of pounds. Technical and non technical people will learn the tools needed to resolve problems in a practical, easy to use way. This enables excellent decision making at all levels Lean Solutions by asking the right questions at the right time.
This is not a computer based data crunching process.
This is a practical process that breaks down, analyses and resolves the defined issue. The PPR system also allows non technical people to conduct the initial investigation of any out-of-standard situation to either hand over to the technical support or to go on and resolve the problem themselves.
5S
It’s just house keeping right?
Working with you, we will demonstrate just how dramatic the correct implementation of 5S can be to your business performance. 5S is a corner stone to Lean Business Implementation. When implemented correctly it can improve productivity by as much as 10% across the whole business, as much as 15% in individual departments and make some individuals 20% more productive.
Just because it’s simple it doesn’t mean it is easy!
Assembly Optimisation
Implement the world best-practice assembly systems in your business, from how the facility flows to how parts are presented and workstations are designed.
Process (line) Optimisation/Design
Implement the world best-practice process systems in your business. Realise efficient factory flow and increase your equipment utilisation by using effective raw material and part presentation.
Visual control
How can you monitor the health of your business at a glance?
Make your processes visible by setting and measuring the right metrics in the right way.
Mistake proofing
What is your defect rate?
This is the process of driving to zero defects regardless of whether you are looking at a paper process, admin process, assembly or manufacturing system.
Pull manufacturing
Implement the core fundamental of a lean system.
Start your journey with us to deliver a robust Just In Time Facility from developing production smoothing, dealing with variation, inventory and working with your suppliers.
Total Productive Maintenance
TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) is an approach to equipment improvement used to reduce costs and improve quality and delivery reliability.
TPM focuses improvement activities on production equipment and the integration of maintenance with production. We will work with you to drive towards the goals of TPM, namely zero breakdowns, zero accidents and zero defects.
Quick changeover (SMED)
Imagine the benefits that single minute changeovers would have on your business?
Increased productivity, greater flexibility to align to true customer demand and a standardised process that will yield consistent results are amongst others. We will see how SMED can be applied to any of your processes that require setup/changeovers and will reduce the set up times to single minutes.
2P – production preparation
Are you past the point of no return on the implementation of a new product or process launch?
Have you already committed expenditure on tooling and equipment?
Maximise your chances for a successful production/process launch by utilising the 2P methodology. This will ensure you get the best out of the process.
By modelling the work flow and building a life size system you will optimize your system efficiency, productivity and manpower requirements. You will also implement the best layout/process possible which will work towards eliminating all of the seven wastes. Standard work will be completed prior to launch which will ensure quality staff training prior to launch. This will, in turn, deliver first time quality and consistency of product or service from day1.
3P – pre production preparation
Get ahead of the game and ensure a seamless new product/process introduction by using the 3P methodology.
You will learn a key tool in the development of new products or services.
The 3P methodology is designed to deliver the new product or service on time and on budget.
At initial concept stage 3P drives you to ensure the product or service meets all customer requirements whilst guaranteeing the best possible design for ease of processing or delivering that service. The 3P methodology can save you millions of pounds by “getting it right” from the start of production and not waiting until the product or service goes live only to discover it doesn’t work "the way we hoped".
Successful implementation of 3P ensures that you are not forced to spend money, time and effort over the years to fix a product or service that should be generating your business a profit.
Business & Product Cost Reduction Process
The cost reduction methodology is a system that looks to reduce all costs from raw materials to human resources.
The automotive industry’s “strip down clinics” , on which this is based, have enabled business such as Toyota to reduce costs by 5% year on year as well as reducing new product costs by as much as 30%.
Others have used this methodology to compete with countries that have lower manufacturing costs, at times even bringing work back from those countries, having proven they can be more cost effective.
This methodology makes businesses review every aspect of their operation and develop a cost conscious culture to stay ahead of their competition.
6 Sigma in your business
Is Six Sigma right for my business?
How is it implemented successfully to deliver sustainable results?
You will see that the six sigma methodology can be used business wide and takes over where conventional problem resolution ends.
This is a must for sophisticated high tolerance industries that are operating in tight margin markets and need to leverage their right-first-time and on-time-delivery metrics.
The six sigma tool is used within systems and processes which are multi variable and multi tasked to achieve 99.998% right-first-time quality levels Lean Solutions.
